Monitor Minecraft servers
An open port 25565 doesn't mean anyone can play. portslie sends the same query the launcher sends before it lists your server, and alerts you when it gets no answer or an empty one. For Java and Bedrock.
What a port check misses
If the server runs behind Pterodactyl or Docker, the port is open before Minecraft has started, and it stays open after the server has crashed and only the wrapper is still running. An ordinary uptime service connects and reports green.
portslie keeps asking after the connection: is there a valid answer? Are slots and version set? Only then is the server up for portslie. A server that is still starting often answers already, but reports 0 slots and no version.
- Java Edition
- Server List Ping, TCP 25565
- Bedrock Edition
- RakNet ping, UDP 19132
- Reads
- Version, slots, player count
- Plugin on the server
- none needed
Three levels instead of green or red
Each check tests step by step how far the server answers. The report says at which level it stops.
- Level 1: port reachable. Java: the port accepts the connection. Bedrock: the ping gets any answer at all.
- Level 2: protocol answers. A valid Server List Ping response or a valid RakNet pong arrives.
- Level 3: content plausible. Slots greater than 0 and a version are set. The report then says, for example, 14/100 players, 1.21.1.
What you get
- One message per outage. An incident only starts after two bad checks in a row. A single lost ping wakes nobody, and the all-clear comes by itself.
- Alerts where you already are. Email, Discord, Slack, Teams, ntfy or your own webhook, each with a test button. The Free plan includes 1 alert channel, Small includes 3.
- A status page for your players. With name, logo, colour and Discord invite, without address and port. See what it looks like.
- Checks from two locations. An outage only counts when the majority of check locations sees it. Where they are is listed under Infrastructure.
Questions about Minecraft monitoring
Do I need a plugin or a query port?
No. The Server List Ping is built into every Java server, including Paper, Spigot, Fabric and Forge. If server.properties contains enable-status=false, the server doesn't answer the query and portslie reports level 1.
Does it work with Geyser, i.e. Java and Bedrock on one server?
Yes, as two targets: one with the check type Minecraft (Java) on the Java port, one with Minecraft Bedrock on the port Geyser opens. That way you see separately whether Bedrock players can still get in.
How often is it checked?
On the Free plan every 5 minutes, on Small every minute, on Large every 30 seconds. You set the interval per target; it can't be faster than the plan allows.
Does portslie see whether the server lags?
No. TPS and tick times can only be measured from inside. portslie checks from outside whether the server answers the way a player sees it before joining.
Can I monitor a server I don't run, such as my network's?
Technically yes, the query is the same one every launcher sends. Only publicly reachable addresses are checked; private networks are blocked.
